Composer
Composing is a natural part of being a musician for me, and it is intimately connected to my bass playing.
Addicted to the Hum (2023)
is an experimental opera for 4 vocalizing instrumentalists, with live electronics, exploring the inner psyche of self-doubt, self-sabotage and queer healing through the use of odd and quirky metaphors, clashing musical styles, and light-space art. What do you do when your refrigerator door won’t close, and how do you fix it?
(songs for my) Odometer Readings (2022)
is a short film that reflects on love and the work we do for others through the lens of physical distance, mileage, and of course, cars. The film includes original music and cinematography as well as live electronics.
spilled wine and torn roses, for vocalizing flutist
written in 2021 with original text by Samantha Kochis. Revised and recorded in August of 2022. Performed by Samantha Kochis.
catalogues
‘catalogues’ is ultimately conceived to be taken apart and performed in many different iterations of itself, and aims to explore what it means to take control of one’s narrative. In this sense, there is flexibility to continue to add new material, making this a living, breathing work. The style of a larger work made up of smaller parts mirrors the name of the piece, and also allows diversity in style and perspective. The focus is on storytelling: what is a story, and how do we talk about our lives? What does it mean to have ownership over certain words? Originally orchestrated for soprano, bassoon, trumpet, bass and percussion, the piece has found its home re-orchestrated for solely soprano and bass: the instrumentation of my duo, confluss.
Scene II from no(w)here (sea)son
Composed and premiered in 2018, this three scene opera follows the relationship between a mother and her son as they navigate tension, grief, and acceptance.
Blackbird arr. Zagnit
confluss’ first virtual collaboration in the time of COVID-19, featuring an original arrangement of The Beatles classic, Blackbird, for soprano and four basses.
